Adze, Maul and Wedge

Noel Brown, of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, is the carver responsible for the finely crafted posts outside of the Snuneymuxw First Nation Administration office in Nanaimo. The treaty office was built in 2000.

Noel Brown is 36 years old. He began carving on his own in his early twenties, but at the age of 25, Squamish carver Richard Baker taught him. Family members from his mother's side, the Louis family in Squamish, also carve. Noel uses the adze, maul and wedge. He used a D-adze and chisels to create the texture on the posts outside of the Snuneymuxw Administration building. As well as working in wood, he is now carving jewellery in gold and silver. He also makes smaller carved items such as bowls and plaques.
