This podcast is a recording made of Snuneymuxw community members and elders singing traditional Snuneymuxw songs in their own language; Island Hul'q'umin'um'. It is an example of a song that is taught to children and others in the community.
Elder Ellen White (Kwulasulwut)
Ellen White, (“Auntie Ellen” to those who know her), is a storyteller and author from the Snuneymuxw First Nation. She is also Elder in Residence, and holds an honourary doctorate, at Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo.
This podcast interview explores some of Ellen's views on Snuneymuxw culture, storytelling and education. It also describes milestones and significant events in her colourful and accomplished life.

Bjørn Simonsen
Bjørn Simonsen is an archaeologist. He completed his university training and spent his career in British Columbia. Semi-retired, he is currently working as a consultant and is involved in teaching First Nations communities about archaeological practices. He has also been involved in policy issues and talks here about the ways in which First Nations can take on the management of their cultural heritage, including archaeological sites and sacred places.

Darren Good is Snuneymuxw on his mother's side. His Hal'q'umin'um' name is Sum Salay Staa. Darren is involved in canoe racing and currently skips for the Island Braves women's 11-person canoe. He has been training as a dancer and a speaker in the longhouse, and continues to look to his Elders for knowledge of his language and culture. Here, he speaks about the process of learning Hal'q'umin'um' and his involvement with canoe paddling.
